Sunburns and the UV's that cause your wrinkles

Sunburns and the UV's that cause your wrinkles

Sunburns Are The Worst!

This last week we went camping as a family and everyone got too much sun 🌞 (even with applying every 2 hours).

SAP CHAP TO THE RESCUE!

My daughter was in so much pain. The first night of the burn, I covered her in SAP CHAP cream and gave her children's Advil to get the pain from the outside and inside. But in the next 3 days, she only needed SAP CHAP.

She told me the next morning,

"Sap Chap really is the best, isn't it? It helped me feel better and sleep!"

The Truth About The Sun

There are three types of ultraviolet (UV) rays: UVA, UVB, and UVC.

UVA rays contribute to skin aging (wrinkles!) and cancer. These rays penetrate the dermis (second layer of skin where collagen is located) damaging our collagen. UVB rays are the primary cause of sunburn and also contribute to skin cancer. UVB rays penetrate the epidermis (top layer of skin) and damage our DNA.

UVC rays are the most damaging but thanks to lovely Mother Earth, they are completely absorbed by the Earth's atmosphere!

The reason why they call some sunscreens "Broad-spectrum" is because it will slow the impact of multiple Ultraviolet rays, namely UVA and UVB.

SPF - Sun Protection Factor

Most sunscreens are not broad spectrum and typically only focus on blocking out UVB. If a sunscreen says SPF 15, that means it will take you 15 times longer to receive skin damage and a burn from UVB rays.

So, if your skin will typically be damaged with 5 min of sun time it will be 75 minutes till you are at the full mercy of the sun's radiation after application. This is NOT taking into account sweat and water. Unless your sunscreen says waterproof, the SPF 15 is only going to be good for UVB rays that you might catch while walking through the park on a warm (not hot) summer day.

The best protection is to get a broad spectrum sunscreen that is waterproof. Leave the lake, ocean, pool 20 minutes before the full effects wear off and reapply. Wait 15 minutes for the cream to soak in before getting back on the water.
